Court upholds sentence in Tafileh attempted murder case

AMMAN — The Court of Cassation upheld a September Criminal Court’s ruling sentencing a young man to 12 years in prison after convicting him of attempting to murder a man in Tafileh in November 2017.

The court declared the 22-year-old defendant guilty of attempted murder over a feud and handed him 20 years in prison.

However, the court decided to reduce the sentence to 12 years after the victim’s family dropped charges against him.

Court documents said that four months before a stabbing incident, the defendant filed a complaint against the victim and two of his brothers for allegedly attacking him.

“The case went to court, and the victim and the defendant reconciled and agreed to close the chapter,” according to court papers.

However, the defendant “was still very upset and decided to take revenge when the appropriate time came”.

On November 18, the court maintained, the defendant entered a shop where the victim was working and stabbed him once in the back.

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where he underwent several surgeries and survived the incident, the court transcripts said.

The Cassation Court ruled that the verdict was correct and that the defendant deserved the verdict he received.

The Cassation Court comprised judges Mohammad Ibrahim, Yassin Abdullat, Naji Zu’bi, Majid Azab and Saeed Mugheid.
