Jordanian poet Suleiman Mashini passes away

AMMAN — Jordanian poet Suleiman Mashini died on Thursday. An established and prolific poet, short story writer and playwright, Mashini was well-known for his lyrics celebrating Jordan, which were sung by renowned singers Samirah Tawfiq, Tawfiq Nimri and Ismael Khader.

He also advocated for Arab unity through his work.  Born in Salt in 1928, Mashini worked at the Jordan Radio and Television Corporation and was a broadcast presenter of the "Jaishuna Al Arabi" (our Arab army) for 30 years.

Mashini was one of the founders of Al Rai daily, Huna Amman, as well as the Jordanian Writer and Amman Almasaa magazines. Mashini was awarded the Istiqlal Medal of the Second, Third and Fourth Orders, recipients of which include prominent political, cultural and business figures.

The poet was also awarded the Order of King Hussein for Excellence of the First Class for his contributions. The poet was 90-years-old when he passed away.
