Jordan votes to support UNRWA, condemn Israeli colonisation

AMMAN — Jordan on Friday voted in favour of several draft resolutions at the UN General Assembly related to the Palestinian cause, supporting UNRWA and condemning Israeli colonisation of occupied Arab territories.

The Kingdom also supported other drafts pertaining to Arab human rights and Palestinians’ rights to their natural resources in their occupied lands, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

A draft resolution on UNRWA operations was approved by a vote of 159 in favour, 5 against (including Israel, the US and Canada) and 12 abstentions. 

The assembly also adopted a draft on providing assistance to Palestinian refugees, which was approved by 163 votes and rejected by Israel and the US, while 13 abstained from voting.

Another draft resolution related to Palestinian refugees’ property and generated revenues received 156 votes in favour, 6 against (including Israel, the US and Canada) and 14 abstentions. 

A draft on the work of the special committee to investigate Israeli practices against the human rights of Palestinians and other Arab residents of the occupied lands was approved by 78 votes and objected to by 10 (including Israel, the US, Canada and Australia), while 84 member states abstained. 

The General Assembly also adopted a draft resolution on the applicability of the Geneva Convention, dated on August 12, 1949 and is related to protecting civilians in times of war, on the Palestinian occupied territories, Jerusalem and other Arab occupied lands. It received 158 votes in favour, six against and 14 abstained. 

A draft resolution on illegal Israeli housing units in the Palestinian territories, including Jerusalem and the Golan Heights received the support of 154 member states, the objection of six and abstention of 15. 

Also, 152 members voted in favour of a draft on Israeli practices that affect the human rights of Palestinians in occupied lands, while eight (including Israel, the US, Canada and Australia) voted against and 13 abstained.

A draft resolution on the occupied Golan Heights received the support of 149 member states, objection of Israel and the US and the abstention of 22.
