AMMAN — One person was critically injured and a second was listed in fair condition on Tuesday, following an accident that involved a mini-van and a vehicle under a tunnel in Amman.

The accident occurred earlier in the day when a motorist’s vehicle broke down inside the tunnel and “he went outside the vehicle and opened the hood to check on the engine”, a senior traffic official said.

“A mini-van was surprised by the parked vehicle inside the tunnel and struck it, sending the motorist flying to the other side,” the official told The Jordan Times.

A video that went viral on social media showed the accident at the moment the min-van smashed the parked vehicle.

Both drivers were at fault, according to the traffic official.

“The driver of the vehicle failed to place warning signs when he pulled over and the mini-van driver was also at fault because he failed to pay attention to the road and was speeding,” the traffic official explained.

The two injured were rushed to a nearby hospital by the Civil Defence Department (CDD) personnel.

“We had two injured individuals. The owner of the vehicle was admitted in critical condition, while the driver of the mini-van was listed in fair condition,” the CDD official told The Jordan Times.
