AMMAN — The World Council of Churches’ (WCC) executive committee on Thursday issued a statement during its concluding meeting, underlining WCC’s support to protect churches in the holy land, especially in Jerusalem.

The committee, which met in Amman for the first time since the establishment of the WCC in 1949, issued a number of recommendations highlighting the stances of the council over international issues, including conditions of churches in Palestine and the challenges they face, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Heads of Jerusalem churches briefed the committee’s Secretary General OlavTveit on the status quo of church institutions and properties in occupied Jerusalem and expressed concern over the violations they encounter. They praised Jordan’s continuous support to Christian communities in occupied Jerusalem and the efforts exerted to preserve the city and its holy sites.
