AMMAN — Police on Monday said that five suspects in total had been arrested in connection with the death of a man last month in Ruseifa that sparked riots and acts of vandalism.

Fadi Khalayleh, 32, was allegedly shot and killed during a wedding on August 26. Several Gendarmerie officers were also injured while attempting to quell the acts of riots a few days later.

One suspect was arrested on Sunday in Amman, after police received a tip-off regarding his whereabouts, Police Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi said.

“Another suspect turned himself in over the holiday weekend. In total, we have five suspects detained in connection with Khalayleh’s death,” Sartawi told The Jordan Times.

Following news of Khalayleh’s death, unknown individuals had launched attacks on public and private property in the teacher’s housing unit in Ruseifa.

The riots were brought under control by the Gendarmerie forces, but the situation remained tensed for several days in the neighbourhood where the acts of arson and the attack occurred.

Community leaders in the area intervened and assisted authorities in settling the situation and organising for tribal settlements, residents told The Jordan Times in previous interviews.
