AMMAN — The Criminal Court prosecutor is currently questioning three men in connection with the shooting death of a 50-year-old man in Zarqa during an armed brawl between two tribes over the weekend, official sources said.

Two other people were also injured by gunshots during the Friday night brawl and were taken to hospital for treatment, Police Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi said.

“The victim was walking in the street when he was struck by a bullet near his chest during the brawl and was rushed to a nearby hospital, but was declared dead on arrival,” Sartawi told The Jordan Times.

Two other people, including one person who was walking with the victim, were also struck by bullets believed to be coming from the direction of the brawl, a judicial source told The Jordan Times.

“Police were called in to the neighbourhood and were able to contain the situation and arrest several individuals,” the judicial source added.

Criminal Court Prosecutor Issam Haddidi has ordered the detention of the suspects for 15 days at a correctional and rehabilitation centre pending further questioning and indictment, according to the judicial source.

“We are still not sure if the arrested suspects were involved in shooting the victims, and we are waiting for criminal lab results and other evidence collected at the scene to tie them to the incident,” according to the judicial source.
