AMMAN — Police on Sunday were questioning a man who allegedly stabbed his wife to death and injured his teenage daughter in Karak earlier in the day, official sources said.

The 51-year-old woman and her daughter were allegedly stabbed by the defendant while at their home in Karak, 140km south of Amman, on Sunday morning, Police Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi said.

The suspect reportedly fled the house and was later arrested by a police patrol that was in the area, Sartawi told The Jordan Times.

“We still do not have a clear idea of the motive behind the stabbing and are currently questioning the suspect,” the police official added.

Both victims were rushed to a nearby hospital where the mother was declared dead up on arrival and her daughter admitted to the surgery unit. She was later listed in fair condition, Sartawi added.

A team of government pathologists at the Karak National Institute of Forensic Medicine headed by Hassan Hawari performed an autopsy on the victim and concluded that she received three stab wounds to the chest and neck, and two minor stab wounds to the knees, a senior medical official told The Jordan Times.

The criminal court prosecutor is currently questioning the suspect to learn more about the stabbing incident and to level charges against him, according to a judicial source.

The suspect remained in custody pending further investigation, the judicial source added.
