Princess Basma honours winners of Queen Alia competition

RUSEIFA — “Step up for your country’s strength” was the theme of this year’s Queen Alia Competition for Social Responsibility, organised by the Jordanian Hashemite Fund for Human Development (JOHUD). 

The winners of the award, who were honoured by HRH Princess Basma on Sunday, focused on projects that serve their local communities.

Launched in 1995, the competition seeks to shed light on prominent issues such as water, the environment and health, and to raise awareness on ways to address these issues by distributing questionnaires to education departments across the Kingdom.

Under the competition’s “Jo-Green” award, university students had to design environmentally-friendly buildings, a challenge that leads them to unleash their “greenest ideas” every year. 

In the presence of HRH Princess Sumaya, the president of the Royal Scientific Society, Princess Basma presented awards to the top three teams of engineering students, who were from Philadelphia University, the University of Jordan and the Hashemite University.  

The competition’s proceeds, collected from the application fees, are used to support national projects. 

Al Rajaa School will receive JD55,000, the Mutah Centre will get JD15,000, JD10,000 will go to physical therapy units and JD16,000 will go to the Education Ministry’s special education resources.

During the ceremony, JOHUD Executive Director Farah Daghistani signed an agreement with Education Ministry Secretary General Mohammad Okour to institutionalise cooperation and raise students’ awareness on social, health and environmental issues.
