Red Cross, Red Crescent societies discuss expatriate rights

AMMAN — The Jordan National Red Crescent Society (JNRCS) in cooperation with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies’ (IFRC) held a regional meeting on the rights of immigrants on Wednesday, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Jordan spends a quarter of its budget on Syrian refugees, while international aid does not meet the volume of needs, JNRCS Chairman Mohammad Hadid said.

Syrian refugees have created “enormous pressures” on employment rates and caused a reduction in wages, Hadid said, adding that the effect on the labour market was not recognised.

Guest workers in Jordan number around 1.25 million, most of whom are Egyptians, the JNRCS chairman added.

The meeting is part of a series of five regional conferences being held around the world.
