JFDA says no cause for concern over safety of Egyptian produce

AMMAN — The Jordan Food and Drug Administration (JFDA) said Saturday that there is no cause for alarm over the safety of Egyptian produce entering the Kingdom. JFDA Director Hayel Obeidat told the Jordan News Agency, Petra, that the administration, in coordination with the Agriculture Ministry, Egyptian authorities and the US Food and Drug Administration, is “closely examining” Egyptian imports to ensure that they are suitable for human consumption.

Obeidat said the JFDA is aware of the US reports on Egyptian produce and is taking the necessary precautions. Earlier this month, the US Centre for Disease Control had reported 119 cases of hepatitis A linked to strawberry smoothies consumed at a café chain. The strawberries used were reportedly imported from Egypt.
