Anani discusses region, ties with world leaders at Islamic economic forum

AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Jawad Anani has briefed several heads of states on challenges facing Jordan due to regional developments, especially the influx of Syrian refugees. 

On the sidelines of his participation in the 12th World Islamic Economic Forum in Jakarta, Anani, who deputised for His Majesty King Abdullah at the event, called on the international community to help the Kingdom overcome this difficult phase, a ministry statement said on Saturday.

At a meeting with Indonesian President Joko Widodo, Anani, who is also minister of industry, trade and supply, conveyed His Majesty’s greetings to Widodo and his wishes for a successful event that would enhance economic cooperation among Muslim countries.

Anani said Jordan works hard to fight extremism and is an effective player in international efforts in the war against terrorism, stressing the Kingdom’s keenness to highlight the true image of Islam.

Widodo called on Muslim scholars to meet and draw a moderate framework to be taught in schools and universities that shows the true image of Islam and discards extremism and terrorism, the statement added.

The Indonesian president also said he would visit the Kingdom soon to further develop the “already distinguished relations” with King Abdullah, and the “deep-rooted” ties between both countries.

Economically, Widodo and Anani discussed bilateral cooperation and the importance of increasing commercial movement between Amman and Jakarta, in addition to establishing joint investment projects that would serve both sides.

Anani also met with Uzbekistani President Islam Karimov, and discussed ways to boost economic relations with Karimov expressing his country’s readiness to provide the Kingdom with water through an under-construction pipeline that will supply Iran and Iraq.

The minister also discussed economic cooperation with  Guinean President Alpha Condé, the Cambodian trade minister and the prime ministers of Malaysia and Sri Lanka.

Anani also briefed these officials on Jordan’s role in the war against terrorism and the burden of hosting 1.3 million Syrians, inviting businesspeople and investors to benefit from investment opportunities in the Kingdom, according to the statement.

 

The 12th World Islamic Economic Forum was held during August 2-4.
