AMMAN — Bilal Munir, 21, was returning home from the mosque on Wednesday evening in Amman's Wihdat area when his life was cut short after a stray bullet fired during a street brawl struck him in the head.

Munir, who had one year left in university, was mourned by friends and residents of the area on social media.

He was also working for a telecom company in Amman, his friends said.

"He was killed in an accident he had nothing to do with. May God have mercy upon him," Munir's friend Wael Al Nattife wrote on his Facebook page, posting a photo of the young man.

Police on Thursday said they arrested a man who reportedly fired the shot that killed Munir.

The victim was walking in the street near a brawl in Wihdat when he was struck by the stray bullet, Maj. Wasfi Etoum, acting spokesperson of the Public Security Department, said.

“The brawl involved a large group of people and firearms were used,” Etoum told The Jordan Times.

“The victim died instantly from the bullet that struck his head, and his body was referred to the National Institute of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy,” the police official added.

Etoum said police rounded up several suspects for questioning following the brawl.

“On Thursday we were able to identify the person who fired the fatal bullet and the weapon was seized,” Etoum added.

The suspect was referred to the Criminal Court prosecutor for questioning and indictment, a senior judicial source told The Jordan Times.
