Regulations stipulate new colour scheme for taxis

AMMAN — The Land Transport Regulatory Commission has started applying regulations issued by its board of directors to unify the colours of each type of public transportation means, LTRC Chief Commissioner Marwan Hmoud said Thursday.

The regulations will be applied to taxis, service cabs — including those operating inside governorates, between governorates, and with neighbouring countries — and buses across the Kingdom, he explained.

“The regulations were officially published in the Official Gazette on April 1, and immediately went into effect as of that date,” Hmoud told The Jordan Times, adding that the regulations needed some time to be circulated.

The upper part of taxis will remain yellow, but the entire lower part, including the front and back bumpers, will be painted with the same colour as of the taxi’s sign on the side, which identifies the office and governorate of the cab, the chief commissioner said.

For example, lower parts of Amman taxis will be green and those in Zarqa will be blue, he noted, adding that the lower part will also include a “Jordan Horizon” logo showcasing tourist destinations in the country.

Hmoud noted that the adjustment is aimed at limiting violations by taxi drivers who work in areas other than their designated governorate by making it easier for traffic police officers to detect them.

“Offices running public transportation means will have to modify their vehicles at their own expense, ranging between JD50 to JD100, before the end of the year,” Hmoud said, noting that there are around 25,000 public transport vehicles of all types across the Kingdom.

According to the commission’s website, the regulations also stipulate installing a yellow-illuminated sign on the roof of taxis which turns off when a passenger is picked up.

Service cabs will continue to be white with the Jordan Horizon logo added in yellow across the lower part of the vehicle.

The white colour will be used for public transportation buses working inside governorates and on main roads across the Kingdom, with the addition of the yellow Jordan Horizon logo on the lower part of buses, according to the regulations.
