Greatest dignity

Jun 01,2015 - Last updated at Jun 01,2015

The entire world had the privilege to witness His Royal Highness Prince Ali rising to the occasion, and more, during the FIFA election a few days ago.

Following the footsteps of his father, the late King Hussein, Prince Ali demonstrated the highest degree of dignity, respect and maturity despite his relative young age.

With confidence, humility, genuineness and majestic simplicity, he withdrew after the results of the first round were announced.

It was obvious what was going on behind closed doors and the dirty dealing and wheeling that the FIFA got used to and became the signature of its culture.

The smart, free, honest and independent organisations that voted for Prince Ali signal the highly needed change that the FIFA critically needs.

This football association is currently residing in the intensive care unit, having suffered a recent blow on top of its chronic problems encompassing corruption and money laundering scandals.

On the other hand, and unfortunately, many countries voted for the status quo, tarnished as it is by a long history of dirty dealings.

It is ironic that Prince Ali and his attractive and sincere message of change was not supported by many of our neighbours and by those countries who we share similarities with.

Was it fear of being caught with the recent tsunami of scandals? Or was it actually and simply an example of “I vote for the highest price”?

It is most likely a combination of these.

Most Asian, African and many Arab countries followed the wrong path; sooner or later the truth will come out and ultimately the good and righteous will prevail.

Shamefully, our beloved Palestine’s vote went to Sepp Blatter despite the clear messages and outcries from the committee and leadership of Palestine.

Jordanian and non-Jordanians alike are proud of the prince’s brave move. Our heads will always be held high.

In the history book Prince Ali is the winner of the FIFA election and one day he will assume the FIFA chair.
