AMMAN — The Jordan Media Commission (JMC) on Wednesday said nine local satellite television channels were recently referred to the prosecutor general for broadcasting without a licence.

“The nine channels went on air without obtaining any licence from the commission, which is illegal,” JMC Director General Amjad Qadi told The Jordan Times.

The commission has not been informed about the measures taken by the prosecutor general against the nine satellite channels, Qadi said.

He added that many other channels have been referred to the prosecutor general since the beginning of this year.

Some of the satellite channels were referred in response to complaints filed with the commission, according to Qadi, while others were referred after the JMC reported violations they had committed.

The JMC director general said there are 16 licensed local channels and 30 Arab satellite channels in Jordan.
