AMMAN — The Higher Education Council on Thursday decided to accept Jordanian students returning from Yemen at local universities as of the first semester of the 2015-16 academic year, according to a statement released Saturday.
During a session chaired by Higher Education and Scientific Research Minister Labib Khadra, the council also formed specialised committees to follow up on the conditions of these students and provide recommendations, the ministry statement said.
Last Wednesday, a source at the ministry said students currently in Yemen are studying at their own expense, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
Around 600 Jordanians are studying in Yemen, according to the latest estimates.
Students who were granted scholarships to study in Yemen in previous years have all been admitted to Jordanian universities, the source told Petra.
Some 1,200 Jordanian students from Yemen were accepted at Jordanian universities in 2011, and a similar number was admitted in 2014 in the parallel programme, while those who excelled in the admission test were accepted in the regular programme, the source said.
