AMMAN — Chilly and rainy weather is expected to prevail on Friday as the country remains under the impact of a cold air mass, the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) said on Thursday.
The cold air mass, which started affecting the Kingdom on Wednesday night, brought heavy rain to different parts of the country and snow to mountainous areas, where roads were temporarily closed due to snow accumulation, according to authorities.
Snow accumulation between late Wednesday night and early Thursday led to the temporary closure of several roads in the southern region, which opened after authorities cleared the snow.
These included the Ras Al Naqab, Maan-Shobak and Buseirah-Qadisiyeh roads in the southern governorates.
By Thursday afternoon, all roads in the country, especially in the southern mountainous areas that witnessed snowfall late Wednesday and early Thursday, were open to traffic, a Public Security Department (PSD) officer told The Jordan Times.
Meanwhile, JMD meteorologist Abdul Munem Qaralleh said the weather will be cold and cloudy on Friday with rain at times, which is expected to be heavy during the night.
Winds will be southwesterly moderate to brisk, turning to westerly at night, and temperatures in Amman will range between a high of 7°C during the day and a low of 3°C at night.
Cold and wet weather is also forecast for Saturday, according to Qaralleh, who noted that rainfall will be heavy during the day.
Temperatures in the capital will reach a maximum of 7°C, dropping to a minimum of 1°C, while winds will be westerly moderate to brisk.
“The impact of the cold air mass is forecast to ease off starting Saturday night, but it will continue to be cold,” Qaralleh told The Jordan Times.
A slight rise in mercury levels is expected on Sunday, but the weather will remain cold, with southwesterly moderate according, turning to northeasterly at night, according to the JMD.
Temperatures in Amman will range between of 8°C and 1°C.
