AMMAN - The authorities closed roads in various parts of the Kingdom Friday evening due to severe frost formation and snowfall.
The Public Security Department (PSD) said the decision was taken to safeguard citizens' lives following fatal road accidents caused by slippery roads.
Two people were killed and several others injured, one of them seriously, in Amman's Shmeisani neighborhoud on Friday in a 10-car pile-up attributed by the CDD to frost formation.
Other accidents blamed on slippery roads were reported around the Kingdom by police and the CDD.
The CDD urged motorists to stay home also in the early hours of the morning due to slippery roads.
Weather forecasters forecast freezing temperatures in most of the Kingdom Friday night and Saturday morning as a polar front which brought snow and rain continues to affect the Kingdom. Temperatures were expected to dip to below 6 degrees Celsius early Saturday, reaching a maximum of two degrees Celsius in Amman during the day.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour declared Saturday a public holiday in all parts of the country except for the port city of Aqaba, which did not witness snowfall nor frost formation. Wednesday and Thursday were declared a public holiday due to the prevailing weather conditions.
