AMMAN — Anti-Narcotics Department (AND) agents on Sunday arrested two Jordanians who were attempting to smuggle 38 kilogrammes of heroin into a neighbouring country, according to official sources.

The agents arrested the two suspects in their vehicle on the Mafraq-Amman highway, a senior AND official told The Jordan Times.

“We have been monitoring the suspects for almost two weeks and arrested them without any major incident. In fact, they were surprised when we surrounded their car,” the official said.

Upon questioning the suspects, the official added, they confessed to planning to smuggle the illegal narcotics to a neighbouring country.

“The suspects informed us they also had accomplices and we are currently searching for them,” the official explained.

A second source told The Jordan Times that the value of one kilogramme of heroin in the local market is estimated at JD18,000.

“The value of the seized narcotic in the local market is around JD684,000 and this was one of our biggest busts in recent years,” the source said.

The two suspects were referred to the State Security Court prosecutor for questioning and indictment, according to a statement released by the Public Security Department.
