AMMAN — Police on Monday said they were searching for a taxi driver who reportedly stole $1 million from a passenger who entered Jordan from the West Bank via the King Hussein Bridge a day earlier.
The passenger filed a complaint saying that he was carrying a bag containing the money in cash and decided to stop on the way to buy some goods when "the driver sped off with his bag", Public Security Department Spokesperson Maj. Amer Sartawi told The Jordan Times.
"The man works in the currency exchange business and had reported to customs agents at the border that he was carrying this money into Jordan for a local company," Sartawi said.
The police official said the suspect is known to taxi drivers working on that route.
"The man did not tell the driver that he was carrying money with him, and most probably the suspect guessed that the bag contained valuables," Sartawi explained.
"We are still investigating the incident and have the vehicle's description," he added.
