Motorists gearing up for winter season

AMMAN — Several auto repair shop owners on Monday expected the number of customers to surge during the first weeks of winter as motorists rush to check their cars in preparation for the wet season.
Hisham Diaa, who owns a garage in the capital’s Bayader neighbourhood, said clients usually check car parts that are essential during winter time.
“Windshield wipers are the most common devices to check,” Diaa told The Jordan Times.
His neighbour Hassan Sarfandi said many of his customers usually show up when a depression is expected to start affecting the Kingdom.
“For example, when Amman witnessed heavy rainfall yesterday [Sunday], many motorists came to my store to have their cars checked.”
Unlike Sarfandi’s customers, Ahmad Tamimi, a public sector employee, said he likes to have his car checked well before the onset of winter.
“It is a must because I feel safer when I make sure that my car is fine before the rainfall starts,” he added.
Diaa said many of his clients cannot afford to purchase new parts for their cars and prefer to fix existing parts to continue to serve them.
The Public Security Department (PSD), which launched its winter campaign on Monday, called on motorists to have their cars checked to avoid any accidents in the cold season.
Within its month-long campaign, the PSD will be checking on motorists’ preparedness for winter.
In a statement e-mailed to The Jordan Times, the PSD said its personnel will check essential car parts required for winter.
PSD teams will notify motorists if any part is damaged and give them a week to fix their cars.
The traffic patrols will check the front and back lights, windscreen wipers, tyres, brakes, side- and rear-view mirrors, seat belts, anti-freeze systems, heating systems and other basic equipment.
Vehicles that are properly equipped for winter will be marked with a sticker, so that PSD personnel do not stop the driver again for a random check.
