Downtown Amman shuttle buses to begin operating Thursday

AMMAN – The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) will start operating shuttle buses in downtown Amman on Thursday, a municipality official said on Wednesday. 

Ayman Smadi, executive director of GAM’s transport and traffic department, said six buses will operate in the city centre and passengers will find a bus every 10 minutes. 

“The buses will start their route from the Raghadan complex and terminate at Muhajireen,” Smadi told The Jordan Times over the phone.

They will pass by a number of main areas in downtown Amman, including Al Husseini Mosque, Shabsough Street, Al Hussein Cultural Centre in Ras Al Ain and King Faisal Square, according to the GAM official. 

Smadi said the municipality will start setting up signs to mark the bus routes and stops. 

“There will be an audio feature in the buses in both English and Arabic so that passengers can learn about the areas they are passing,” Smadi added, noting that the fare is 250fils. 

The project is designed to alleviate traffic jams in downtown Amman and provide Jordanian families with an easy and affordable way to travel around the city centre, he said. 

“Many motorists are unable to find parking spaces in the area, so they can park their car in a convenient place and use these buses.”
