Freed Libya envoy re-deployed to Greece

AMMAN — Jordan on Monday appointed  Fawaz Aitan, who was kidnapped by an armed group in Tripoli mid-April and freed last month, as the country’s ambassador to Greece, a government official told The Jordan Times.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, declined to say if the government plans to replace Aitan in Tripoli, amid frequent travel alerts advising Jordanians not to go to Libya, citing the escalating unrest in the North African country.

Moreover, the ministry called on Jordanians who are currently in Libya to exercise extreme caution and to avoid areas of conflict or protest.

At a press conference held last month to announce the release of Aitan, Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Judeh told the press that Jordan will consider sending an envoy to Libya “at the right time”.

According to the Ministry’s Spokesperson Sabah Rafie, some Jordanians have already returned to the Kingdom since issuing that alert, without specifying the number of returnees.

In its announcement on May 20, the ministry also called on Jordanians residing in Libya to contact the Jordanian embassy in Tripoli to provide their personal details via designated telephone numbers.
