Jordan, Russia ‘seeking solution to Syria crisis’

AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah on Wednesday held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin that focused on bilateral ties and means to develop them at all levels. 

Discussions also focused on the situation in the Middle East, particularly the Syrian crisis and its regional repercussions, according to a Royal Court statement. 

At the meeting, held at the presidential palace in Moscow, King Abdullah and Putin underlined their commitment to institutionalising mechanisms of cooperation to best serve the interests of the two countries. 

The two leaders voiced their willingness to develop cooperation in the areas of energy, water, agriculture, transport and tourism. 

They also reviewed efforts to bring about peace between the Palestinians and the Israelis according to the two-state solution and mitigate the impact of the Syrian crisis on the stability of the region, especially in light of the growing violence and extremism. 

In press statements before the talks, the Monarch and Putin expressed their “satisfaction” over the level of Jordanian-Russian ties. 

The King, who returned home on Wednesday, said the visit aimed at improving coordination and cooperation vis-à-vis several issues, describing the relationship between Jordan and Russia as “distinguished”. 

“Russia plays a significant role in our region and we very much appreciate this role…,” His Majesty said, noting that Russia and Jordan seek to come up with a political solution to the Syrian crisis.  

For his part, the Russian president underlined that his country and the world appreciate Jordan and King Abdullah’s role in supporting peace, stability and security in the Middle East, according to the statement. 

The meeting was attended by Royal Court Chief Fayez Tarawneh, Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh, King’s Office Director Imad Fakhoury, Director of the General Intelligence Department Gen. Feisal Shobaki and senior officials and diplomats.

Prior to Russia, King Abdullah had visited the Vatican and Austria.

He held talks with Pope Francis that focused on efforts exerted to promote the values of peace, tolerance and coexistence between Islam and Christianity.

Discussions also tackled bilateral ties and the political developments in the region. 

In Austria, the King met with President Heinz Fischer and discussed prospects for further cooperation and efforts to bring about peace between Palestinians and Israelis.
