U-23 squad eyes Asian Cup qualifiers

AMMAN — The U23 national football squad is currently holding a training camp in Tunisia as they start it summer agenda leading up to the U-23 Asian Cup qualifiers slated for Amman September 1-9 as well as the Arab Cup later in the year.

Jordan will host the qualifiers and are awaiting the draw to be held at AFC headquarters in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia on May 29 when 44 teams playing in 11 groups will be decided with group leaders and 4 best second place teams battle in the qualifiers for the final 16 spots.

In 2024, the U-23 squad exited the first round at the 6th AFC U23 Asian Cup in Qatar, after they finished last in Group A after holding Australia 0-0, losing to Qatar 2-1 and going down 4-1 to first time qualifiers Indonesia. A semifinal spot would have possibly advanced Jordan to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

It was the Kingdom’s 6th time at the U23 Asian Cup (previously the Asian Championship). Their best performance was finishing 3rd in 2013. They reached the quarterfinals in 2016 and 2020 and were eliminated from the first round in 2018 and 2022 and 2024. Previous champions are Iraq 2013, Japan 2016, Uzbekistan 2018, Korea 2020, Saudi Arabia 2022, Japan 2024.

The AFC has decided that as of 2028, the event will be held every four years, instead of every two.

The U23 team is now overseen between senior team coach Jamal Sellami and his compatriot Omar Najhi as Jordan will mostly rely on U23 players to lead the Kingdom at the upcoming Arab Cup to be held in Qatar December 1-18. Jordan was drawn in Group C alongside Egypt, UAE and the winner of the Mauritania vs Kuwait match.
