AMMAN — Jordan's national football team suffered a 4-1 defeat to Switzerland in an international friendly at AFG Arena in St. Gallen on Sunday, as The Nashama continued their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The match was the first of two friendlies scheduled ahead of Jordan's historic World Cup appearance, with the team set to face Colombia on June 7 in San Diego.

Switzerland, ranked 19th in the world, enjoyed the better start and controlled possession for much of the opening half, while Jordan relied primarily on counterattacks.

The hosts opened the scoring in the 28th minute when Breel Embolo converted a penalty after Jordan goalkeeper Yazeed Abu Laila fouled Remo Freuler inside the area. The referee awarded the spot-kick after consulting the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

Switzerland doubled their advantage five minutes later as Dan Ndoye finished off a well-worked attacking move after being played through on goal.

The Swiss added a third goal deep into first-half stoppage time when Granit Xhaka converted another penalty. The referee again reviewed the incident through VAR before confirming the decision.

Jordan coach Jamal Sellami made several changes during the second half as he looked to assess as many players as possible ahead of the World Cup, and the substitutions helped improve Jordan's performance.

The Nashama reduced the deficit in the 52nd minute through Odeh Fakhouri, who struck a precise effort from outside the penalty area.

Three minutes later, Jordan was initially awarded a penalty, but the decision was overturned following a VAR review.

Jordan enjoyed much of the possession in the second half, while Switzerland appeared content to slow the tempo and manage the game.

Despite Jordan's improved display, Switzerland scored their fourth goal in the 79th minute when Christian Fassnacht capitalised on a defensive error that left him one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

Jordan will conclude its World Cup preparations against Colombia on June 7 before beginning its Group J campaign.

The Kingdom will open its tournament against Austria in San Francisco on June 17 before facing Algeria on June 23.

Jordan will then travel to Dallas to meet reigning world champions Argentina in their final first-round match.
