AMMAN — Jordan’s U-23 squad qualified to the AFC U23 Asian Cup, clinching the sole qualifying berth from Group A after they beat Turkmenistan 2-1 to move to the Championship for the 7th time.

Jordan topped Group Afollowing earlier easy wins over Bhutan 11-0 and Chinese Taipei 6-0. Turkmenistan beat Chinese Taipei 5-1 and Bhutan 2-0, while Bhutan beat Chinese Taipei 3-1

A total of 44 teams played in 11 groups, with group leaders and 4 best second place teams securing a spot in the final 16 - the 2026 AFC U23 Asian Cup to be held in Saudi Arabia. Other qualifiers were Japan, Vietnam, Australia, China, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Thailand, Lebanon, Iraq, Qatar, Iran, UAE, South Korea and Syria.

In the 6 past times at the Asian Cup, Jordan’s best performance at the AFC U23 Asian Cup was finishing 3rd in 2013.They reached the quarterfinals in 2016 and 2020 and were eliminated from the first round in 2018 and 2022 and 2024.

Earlier this year, Jordan lost to Oman in the final of the 6thU23 West Asia Championship in their fifth time at the competition which they won in 2021.

The qualifiers have given football officials a positive boost as team coaches try to rely on and provide younger players the needed competitive experience to carry Jordan’s national teams forward. The Kingdom is expected to mostly rely on U23 players at the Arab Cup to be held in Qatar December 1-18 when many pros playing in foreign leagues are expected to be away. Jordan was drawn in Group C alongside Egypt, UAE and the winner of the Mauritania vs Kuwait match.
