AMMAN — Mexico secured a historic 10th Concacaf Gold Cup title with a 2-1 victory over the United States at NRG Stadium in Houston on Monday night, underlining their dominance in the region with a commanding performance.
The match began with an early shock as Chris Richards gave the US the lead in the 4th minute, heading home from a well-delivered set-piece. However, that moment proved to be one of few highlights for the Americans, as Mexico took control of the game from that point onward.
Despite trailing, Mexico dictated the tempo, maintaining 60% possession and recording eight shots on target compared to just three from the hosts. They also won an astonishing 12 corners, while the US failed to earn a single one.
Raul Jimenez brought the scores level in the 27th minute with a powerful strike from inside the box, capping off sustained pressure from Mexico. US goalkeeper Matt Freese was kept busy throughout the first half, making several crucial saves to keep the score even at the break.
The second half was more of the same, with Mexico continuing to dominate. Their persistence paid off in the 77th minute when captain Edson Alvarez rose highest to head in the winner from a set-piece. Though the goal was checked by VAR for a possible offside, it was ultimately given.
The US pushed forward in the final minutes in search of an equaliser, but Mexico’s defence held firm to seal the victory. It was a frustrating night for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, who struggled to create clear-cut opportunities after their early goal.
Javier Aguirre’s men celebrated their 10th Gold Cup triumph — the most by any nation — in front of a jubilant Mexican crowd. Mexican Captain Edson Alvarez was named player of the tournament, while Panama’s Ismael Diaz finished as top scorer with six goals.
