AMMAN — The Criminal Court prosecutor has referred a 20-year-old woman for psychiatric evaluation one day after she allegedly stabbed her uncle to death in the Irbid Refugee Camp, an official source said Saturday.
The suspect reportedly had an argument with her uncle at their home and “stabbed him with a kitchen knife in the chest”, the source added.
“We received information that the suspect was suffering from psychiatric problems and after Criminal Court Prosecutor Qahtan Qawaqzeh questioned her, he decided to refer her to the National Institute of Psychiatric Medicine [NIPM)],” the source told The Jordan Times.
It will take a medical team at the NIPM around three months to finish evaluating the suspect, according to the source.
A post-mortem conducted on Saturday at the Irbid National Institute of Forensic Medicine indicated that the victim died of internal bleeding caused by a single stab wound to the chest that penetrated the heart, a medical source told The Jordan Times.
Qawaqzeh is expected to question family members who were at the house at the time of the incident, the first source said.
“The real cause of the stabbing is not clear to investigators and there are unconfirmed reports that the victim also suffered from psychiatric problems,” he added.
