AMMAN — The Court of Cassation has upheld a Criminal Court ruling, sentencing a woman to 10 years in prison after convicting her of murdering her grandmother in Irbid.

The court first declared the defendant guilty of putting a poisonous substance in her family’s food, which led to the death of her grandmother. The court handed the defendant the death penalty.

However, the court decided to reduce the sentence to 10 years in prison because the victim’s family members dropped the charges against the defendant.

Court papers said the defendant “wanted to harm her brother, so she decided to mix a poisonous liquid used to kill cockroaches into the food she cooked.

“The family ate the food and fell ill, but the grandmother passed away,” according to the court documents.

The defendant contested the Criminal Court’s ruling through her lawyer, alleging that “the ruling depended on the contradictory testimonies of unreliable witnesses”.

The lawyer also argued that the prosecution failed to provide “any solid evidence linking the defendant to the murder”.

The Criminal Court’s general attorney asked the higher court to uphold the verdict.

The higher court ruled that the Criminal Court followed the proper procedure when sentencing and that the defendant is deserving of the verdict she received.

The Court of Cassation judges presiding were Mohammad Ibrahim, Nayef Samarat, Hayel Amr, Qassem Dughmi and Hammad Ghzawi.
