AMMAN — The Water Ministry, in cooperation with other partners, on Monday launched an awareness campaign to protect groundwater resources.
Deputising for Water Minister Mohammed Najjar, Ministry Secretary General Jihad Mahamid, the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) project head Rebecca Bahls and other water experts from the public and private sectors attended the launching ceremony at the Royal Cultural Centre, according to a ministry statement.
The campaign is part of the Technical Cooperation between the BGR and the Ministry of Water and Irrigation for Ground Water Resources Management, which is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) to enhance the water harvesting, water preservation and increase awareness on the reality of groundwater in the Kingdom.
Mahamid said that this campaign is part of continuous efforts to raise awareness of the Kingdom’s water reality and the challenges it faces, the importance of preserving groundwater resources and limiting their pollution.
The secretary general said that the ministry’s strategic plan, which accords with the Jordan Document 2025, includes realising sustainability for the management of water resources, which requires the participation of all international stakeholders.
Bahls highlighted the importance of preserving groundwater and surface water resources in Jordan considering the Kingdom’s lack of vital resources, which the Jordanian and German governments are working to improve through bilateral cooperation, noting that the BGR has implemented 25 projects in the Kingdom since 1963.
Assistant Secretary General for Media Affairs Omar Salameh said that such awareness campaigns to rationalise water consumption and preserve groundwater is part of the ministry’s strategy to provide additional water amounts for citizens.
