AMMAN — According to an executive programme in the Economic Modernisation Vision, the Ministry of Water and Irrigation has proposed amendments to the water tariff and segmenting water users, subject to approval by the Cabinet.

The tariff amendment is part of the "a plan for the financial sustainability of the water sector", according to a document cited by Al Mamlaka TV.

According to the document titled “Progress report for the Executive Programme of the Economic Modernisation Vision for H1 2023," the Ministry of Water and its affiliates are currently implementing the Plan for the Financial Sustainability of the Water Sector, which includes the tariff adjustment and segments for water users.

According to the executive programme, the government planned to approve the water tariff amendment in September, while earlier this year, the Ministry of Water announced that it would "gradually increase" the water tariff in the coming years, stressing that it "will not change" in 2023.

In March, the Cabinet approved the National Water Strategy (2023-2040), which was preceded by a thorough study of the realities of the water sector, Jordan’s large-scale water scarcity issue and the country’s limited sources amid increasing demand.

The document showed that water loss was reduced by 2.27 per cent during the Q1 2023, and that work is under way to measure the loss reduction results for Q2 2023.
