AMMAN — The Water Authority of Jordan and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on Monday signed a tentative agreement to fund the revamping of the Zay water purification station.

Expenses are estimated at $20 million, and work is set to begin in 2020. The project seeks to increase water flow from the King Abdullah Canal in the Jordan Valley to the Zay station, which supplies Amman with 40 per cent of its annual water needs, said Secretary General of the Jordan Water Authority Eyad Dhayyat during the signing ceremony.

Valuing the Japanese grant, Dhayyat said that the upgrade also provides energy saving systems, according to a Water Ministry statement.
