Walk Free activists urge Australia to help Syrian refugees in Jordan

By JT - May 09,2015 - Last updated at May 09,2015

AMMAN — Activists from the global anti-slavery movement Walk Free have demanded that the Australian government contribute to supporting the Syrian Regional Response Plan, according to a statement released Saturday by Tamkeen for Legal Aid and Human Rights.

On April 28, activists delivered more than 100,000 signatures to Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop to increase funding for “the fight against forced child marriage in Syrian refugee camps in Jordan”. It is estimated that $8.7 billion is needed this year, the statement said. Child marriage among Syrian refugees, it added, has doubled since the start of the war four years ago. The page www.walkfree.org/end-child-marriage-jordan offers more information on the campaign.
