AMMAN — UNRWA media adviser Adnan Abu Hasna has said that the relief agency is facing a financial deficit estimated at between $100 million and $200 million, the amount needed to ensure the continuation of its vital services and activities for Palestinian refugees.
Speaking to Al Mamlaka TV, Abu Hasna said that the agency is grappling with major financial challenges that extend beyond Gaza Strip, the West Bank and Jerusalem to include Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, Syria and Jordan, where many face poverty and unemployment, particularly in Lebanon.
He stressed that UNRWA experiences recurring financial crises, warning that current funding will only sustain operations until the end of August unless urgent financing is secured.
Abu Hasna said that the agency needs immediate support to guarantee salaries for nearly 30,000 employees and contractors and to continue providing essential humanitarian services.
He added that UNRWA faces serious challenges on multiple fronts, especially in Gaza, where around 90 per cent of the agency’s facilities have been completely damaged, complicating efforts to resume education and healthcare services.
Despite the difficulties, he said the educational process in Gaza is continuing under extremely harsh conditions, amid shortages of stationery and classroom furniture, as well as severe psychological pressures on students.
Abu Hasna noted that around 11,000 UNRWA employees in Gaza are making significant efforts to maintain educational and health services despite the immense challenges.
He also said the agency has been heavily affected by the suspension of funding from the US administration, adding that extensive efforts are under way with various parties to secure the necessary financing.
Abu Hasna highlighted Jordan’s historical and strategic role as a key supporter of UNRWA, affirming that Jordanian backing continues despite the difficult circumstances facing the agency.
