Two dead of carbon monoxide poisoning in Mafraq

AMMAN — A man and his wife died in Mafraq Saturday of carbon monoxide poisoning after inhaling gas from the heater, the Civil Defence Department (CDD) said Sunday, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.  

The CDD urged people not to leave their heaters on while sleeping, Petra said.

In a statement e-mailed to The Jordan Times, the CDD said its cadres dealt with 3,478 rescue and aid cases since last Wednesday and until 11am Sunday.  

The department said it transferred 693 kidney patients to hospitals for dialysis and dealt with 195 deliveries in addition to evacuating 2,590 people who were stuck in their vehicles. 

In Ajloun, the CDD evacuated 1,422 people who were trapped by snow between Wednesday and Sunday. 

On Sunday, CDD rescuers evacuated around 20 foreign tourists who were stranded by snow in Petra in the Kingdom’s south, according to the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA).

The authority announced it closed the historic city to tourists because of the weather conditions to ensure their safety.

PDTRA Chief Commissioner Mohammad Nawafleh told Petra agency that snow accumulation in some areas in the region reached 90cm.
