Two arrested in border infiltration from Syria — army source

AMMAN — Border Guards during the weekend dealt with separate attempts by two people to illegally enter the Kingdom through the Syrian border and arrested them, a source at the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army (JAF) said Sunday.

The two people were interrogated before being referred to specialised authorities, the source added, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

On Saturday, a source said Border Guards foiled an attempt to smuggle 290,000 narcotic pills and ammunition from Syria into the Kingdom.

Two weeks ago, Border Guards arrested three non-Arabs, whose nationalities were not specified, while they were trying to sneak into a neighbouring country, and they were referred to specialised authorities.

In late July, Border Guards arrested three infiltrators who were attempting to cross into the Kingdom from Syrian territory.

They were found in possession of weapons and communication tools.

During the past months, border surveillance troops have detected, and arrested or killed a number of infiltrators, mostly narcotics smugglers and suspected terrorists.

The army has repeatedly stressed that it would deal with any attempts to cross the border, in any direction, and schemes to harm Jordan and Jordanians with the necessary force.

Also on Sunday, a JAF source said Border Guards received 196 Syrian refugees during the past 72 hours, and transferred them to camps and shelters.

Royal Medical Services cadres provided assistance and treatment to the injured.
