Tribal forum reviews positive results of jalwa document

AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah is relieved that practical results have been realised from the implementation of the jalwa document, Adviser to His Majesty for Tribal Affairs Atef Hajaya said on Tuesday

Jalwa is a tribal tradition that entails a forced relocation in the event that a member of a tribe commits murder. The practice can include the eviction of an entire family.

The aim of the practice, its supporters say, is to avoid friction between the victim’s tribe and the murderer’s tribe if they reside in the same area.

The jalwa document has contributed to societal peace and security as thousands of families have returned to their areas of origin after suffering from the ramifications of jalwas for years, Hajaya said during the 15th tribal forum.

The document was adopted in September 2021.

During the event, organised by the Tribes Consultancy and attended by several dignitaries and tribal judges from across the Kingdom, Hajaya conveyed King Abdullah's greetings to attendees and all stakeholders that played a role in implementing the document that regulates the tribal practice, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Discussions during the meeting went over several issues that the consultancy referred to in the jalwa document, such as expanding the scope of jalwa, where the document dealt with this issue and restricted jalwa to the perpetrator, father and sons and for a period that does not exceed one year.
