Ties, region top FM’s array of meetings at Munich conference

AMMAN — Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Saturday held separate talks with several counterparts and officials participating in the Munich Security Conference that kicked off on Friday, with discussions focussing on means to enhance the Kingdom's ties and the latest regional developments. 

During the meetings, Safadi reiterated the importance for the international community to unite to reach a solution to the Palestinian issue in a way that can guarantee realising a just and permanent peace that is accepted by the region’s peoples, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

A two-state solution that guarantees the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital on the pre-1967 lines that can live in peace with Israel according to the international legitimacy resolutions and the Arab peace initiative is the only means to end the conflict and realise a comprehensive peace, he stressed. 

The meetings also focused on efforts exerted to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis, where Safadi highlighted the importance of resorting to joint and systematic action to reach a political solution that can maintain Syria's unity and restore its security and stability and create a conducive environment for the voluntary return of refugees. 

In this regard, the minister reviewed Jordan's burdens as a result of the Syrian refugee crisis, calling on the international community to bear its responsibilities in facing the repercussions of this crisis. 

Safadi also highlighted the significance of supporting Iraq in maintaining its security and stability and helping it in reconstruction efforts. 

He stressed the Kingdom's continuous cooperation with partners in the international community in the war against terrorism. 

Safadi participated in a quartet meeting with counterparts from Egypt, Sameh Shukri, Germany’s Heiko Maas and France’s Jean-Yves Le Drian, which mainly addressed means to embark on practical steps in the peace process and address regional developments.
