Teachers to begin strike on August 17 — syndicate

AMMAN — The Jordan Teachers Association (JTA) on Saturday said teachers will begin a strike on August 17, the first day of work for educators and administrative staff in the 2014-2015 academic year.

In a statement, the JTA said the strike will be held due to the ministry’s “failure to meet teachers’ demands” of amendments to the civil service bylaw, enhancing health insurance services, referring the ministry’s teacher fund to the Anti-Corruption Commission and not enacting stiff penalties to stop the frequent attacks on teachers.

JTA President Hussam Masheh said the strike will start before the beginning of the academic year, on August 24, which he said would give the government time to meet the educators’ calls, according to the statement.
