AMMAN — Forty per cent of students who sat for the Tawjihi (General Secondary Certificate Examination) summer session passed, compared with a pass ratio of 56.3 per cent registered last year.

Of the 57,141 students who sat for the exam, 22,974 students passed, said Education Minister Mohammad Thneibat at a press conference held on Sunday, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

The pass rate stood at 60.3 per cent in the scientific stream, 16.9 per cent in the literary stream, 13.8 per cent in Sharia, 32.1 per cent in IT and 28.4 per cent in health education, according to the minister.

As for the regular vocational stream, which comprises agricultural, industrial, hospitality and domestic education, a total of 2,617 students passed of the total 7,408 who sat for the exam, or 35.3 per cent.

Figures also showed the pass ratio of students from private schools stood at 26 per cent, 37.6 per cent in the scientific stream, 18.4 per cent in the literary stream and 42.4 per cent in the IT branch.

At the press conference, Thneibat said the ministry has developed many administrative and technical strategies related to the Tawjihi in order to ensure justice and equal opportunity, including reducing the number of schools that serve as test halls from 1,640 to 420.

“This measure has also mitigated the pressure on the ministry and concerned authorities,” the minister highlighted, citing other procedures the ministry has taken to address imbalances in the exam.

He noted that this session’s results have showed the actual and real abilities of students amid the “unprecedented” monitoring measures taken in cooperation with different apparatus.

The minister indicated that 768 students from the scientific stream scored 95 to 99.9 per cent and 25 from the literary stream earned a similar range of scores.

In addition, a total of 5,227 students from all streams have scored between 90 and 94.9 per cent and 11,159 between 85 and 89.9 per cent, reported Petra.
