AMMAN — Authorities on Sunday said they arrested one person and are currently searching for a second suspect in connection with the stabbing death of a man in Amman earlier in the day.

The 38-year-old man was allegedly dropped by a motorist at a private hospital in Shmeisani neighbourhood on Sunday morning, suffering from multiple stab wounds, a senior official source said.

“The motorist left the victim at the hospital and sped away with his vehicle,” the official source told The Jordan Times.

Police were immediately contacted by the hospital administration but, by the time they arrived, the victim had succumbed to his wounds, according to the source.

“Investigators reviewed the security tapes and managed to trace the motorist and detained him for questioning,” the official source added.

Based on initial testimony of the motorist, police learnt that two individuals might be involved in the stabbing incident, according to the official source.

Police Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi confirmed that one suspect was arrested in Hashemi Shamali “following an ambush by the police”.

“Police found a knife with the 40-year-old suspect and it was sent to the criminal lab for further analysis,” Sartawi told The Jordan Times.

The police official said that the cause of the stabbing incident, based on initial questioning of the suspect, indicated that “it was for personal reasons”.

Search is ongoing for another suspect and police have a “clear idea” of his identity, the official source said.
