In-store retailers struggle amid rise in online shopping, says sector representative

AMMAN — The rise of online purchases and postal packages are “tremendously” affecting in-store retailers, according to the Textile, Readymade Clothes and Footwear Syndicate.

President of the Textile, Readymade Clothes and Footwear Syndicate Sultan Allan told The Jordan Times that the local apparel sector is in “urgent need” of effective solutions that would revive the sector and support apparel business operators.

“Online sales are expanding year-on-year and street vending is also increasing,” Allan added, calling for the review of existing procedures for postal packages.

Additionally, Allan said during a recent press conference that the value of imported apparels during the first quarter of 2022 reached JD57 million. 

Recently, former president of Jordan’s Textile and Readymade Clothes Syndicate Muneer Deyeh told The Jordan Times that prices are stable, despite current inflation levels worldwide.

Deyeh said that “stores are running sales, discounts and different deals to make the most out of summer traffic”.

In the beginning of 2022, the customs duty to 5 per cent on clothes and footwear, a governmental decision which was praised by sector representatives due to having a positive impact on the sector.
