AMMAN — The Jordan Water Company (Miyahuna) said Tuesday that its cadres controlled a slight water contamination in Ruseifa, 12km east of Amman.
Miyahuna said it received a complaint on Monday night from a subscriber who reported a change in the quality of drinking water, and sent its personnel to inspect the location, in cooperation with the Health Ministry and the Water Authority of Jordan (WAJ).
The Zarqa Health Directorate also said it received complaints from residents of the Naqab area in Ruseifa and sent its cadres to extract water samples from the citizens’ tanks, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
Lab tests revealed the water was polluted because wastewater seeped into the drinking water pipeline feeding the Naqab area as a result of a malfunction, affecting 150 households, according to Zarqa Health Director Turki Kharabsheh.
To control the incident, Miyahuna cut off 40 house connections and emptied their tanks of the contaminated water, Petra reported.
The area is supplied by the Marqab pumping station in Amman, Kharabsheh said, noting that pumping was stopped and the pipeline was disconnected.
Miyahuna said it will replace the 250-metre-long pipeline and install new house connections in the affected area.
The company said it will start pumping again once it makes sure the water is in line with technical standards, in coordination with central labs at the WAJ and the Health Ministry, adding that it will supply subscribers with water through tankers until supply resumes.
It urged subscribers to keep away from manholes and keep their covers intact to avert public health hazards.
Kharabsheh said no poisoning cases were reported.
