AMMAN — In a June 29 handover ceremony at the US embassy in Amman, Chargé d’Affaires Rohit Nepal signed over leadership responsibilities to newly arrived Chargé d’Affaires Peter Shea.
Nepal has completed his three-year tour in Jordan and will be heading to Washington DC for his next assignment, according to a US embassy statement.
Shea is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service and most recently a senior advisor in the Department of State’s Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs (NEA).
He previously served in Washington and overseas diplomatic posts including Istanbul, Cairo, Baghdad and Moscow.
Shea is no stranger to Jordan; he previously served as Deputy Political Counsellor in Amman between 2013 and 2016.
He also deployed on three occasions as Acting Deputy Chief of Mission in Beirut, Lebanon.
In previous roles, Shea served as Deputy Principal Officer at US Consulate General in Istanbul.
While based in Washington, he directed NEA’s Office of Iraq Affairs and earlier coordinated NATO-Afghanistan operations.
Prior to joining the Foreign Service, Shea was a senior national security consultant with Booz Allen Hamilton.
He holds an MA from Georgetown University and a BA from The American University.
Shea was born and raised in Worcester, Massachusetts and is joined in Amman by his wife and three children.
