AMMAN — Senate President Faisal Fayez on Saturday expressed appreciation of the World Bank Group (WBG) efforts to support Jordan, calling for further assistance to enable the Kingdom to address the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the current regional circumstances.
During his meeting with WBG Dean of the Board of Executive Directors Mirza Hassan, Vice President of the World Bank for Middle East and North Africa Affairs Farid Belhadj, and Regional Director of the Mashreq Department Saroj Kumar Jha, Fayez said that the Kingdom has hosted hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees, noting that the cost of receiving them surpassed $12 billion.
He said that the provided assistance has covered no more than 25 per cent of the overall expenditure, which increased Amman’s economic and financial challenges, urging donors and international financial institutions to provide Jordan with further support, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.
The members of the WBG delegation expressed understanding of Jordan’s economic situation, stressing keenness to build partnerships with the Kingdom towards creating new jobs, as well as supporting Amman’s economic growth, competitiveness and human capital.
