AMMAN — Senate Women Committee members Khawla Armouti and Reem Abu Dalbouh participated in the Global Conference of Women Parliamentarians organised by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), under the theme “Achieving Equality: Eliminating Gender-Based Stereotypes and Negative Social Norms.”
During the conference held in Belgrade, Serbia, Armouti said that addressing gender-based stereotypes is essential to building more just and equitable societies, stressing the need for genuine partnership and coordination among institutional and community stakeholders.
She highlighted the importance of strengthening legislative and legal frameworks, promoting more balanced media discourse, and encouraging media platforms and content creators to move away from gender stereotyping.
Armouti also stressed the need to enhance women’s economic and social empowerment through safe and supportive work environments that ensure equal opportunities.
“The Jordanian Parliament plays an important role in oversight and legislation by reviewing laws and introducing amendments that support women’s participation across various sectors,” she said.
She also underlined the importance of engaging local and community leaders to strengthen support for women’s empowerment.
Armouti said that the political will of His Majesty King Abdullah has driven constitutional and legislative reforms aimed at enhancing the role of Jordanian women in society and decision-making.
She noted that the 2022 constitutional amendments included the addition of the term “Jordanian women” to Chapter Two of the Constitution and reaffirmed the state’s commitment to empowering women and protecting them from all forms of violence and discrimination.
Armouti also pointed to broader legal reforms that have boosted women’s political participation, as well as progress within the judiciary, reflected in the growing number of women judges and their appointment to leadership positions.
