AMMAN — After their homeland turned into a terrifying battleground, Nour and her husband fled to Jordan with their daughter in 2016, leaving behind their beloved home in pursuit of safety.

Arriving at the crowded Azraq refugee camp, Nour’s heart ached at the sight of the thousands of caravans and the faces etched with scars of the war. But even with all the chaos, “I felt relieved and safe. I could not believe the absence of bombs and shooting.”

Months passed, and the family grew, with four more children born into the uncertain world. Nour and her husband struggled to provide for their growing family, fully dependent on aid for survival. With no opportunity for employment, they clung to the hope of a better future, one where their children could thrive in safety and peace. “I was continuously looking for opportunities to educate myself while in the camp. I’ve always aimed to improve my situation for both myself and my family,” she explained. “When I discovered the different programmes run by CARE International in Jordan at the camp, I immediately signed up to be a volunteer leader.” Throughout the years, Nour actively participated in different courses and activities, eager to learn and contribute.

Through these courses, Nour discovered the hydroponics programme, funded by the Austrian Development Agency. “I was fascinated; I never knew that such an innovative way of growing plants existed, without any soil.” Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, Nour engaged in online sessions about the different types of hydroponics systems and learned about the essential equipment needed for the setup.

Nour also learned how to maintain optimal conditions for plant growth, including monitoring pH levels and managing temperature. As restrictions eased, she attended in-person sessions, immersing herself in the practical application of hydroponic farming. “I vividly remember the moment we were invited to our first in-person session and were given our first payment before we began. I couldn’t believe it. That was my first ever income. I used it to buy clothes, shoes, and food for my children.”

Her passion and dedication did not go unnoticed. Recognising her potential, the team in CARE Jordan invited her to become a trainer, empowering her to share her newfound expertise with fellow refugees in the camp. Nour embraced her role with passion, guiding and mentoring over 500 individuals in the art of hydroponics. “I am so proud of my achievements. I’ve dedicated a lot of efforts to this programme.”

With the support of her husband and children, Nour started implementing a hydroponic system at home. They received the kit from CARE Jordan and worked together to set up the system. “We worked carefully to take care of the growing vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers and lettuce.” As the plants flourished, they started incorporating the fresh produce in their meals. Encouraged by their success, they decided to sell the extra good vegetables to their neighbours. This not only provided them with an extra source of income, but it also brought their community closer together.

With each seed planted and each harvest gathered, she finds purpose and hope. Through her tireless efforts, her strength and confidence grow. “I am a mother, a caregiver and a leader.” Nour’s story shares a powerful message for all women.

“I encourage them to always seek out opportunities and never give up. You can achieve your dreams even in tough times.”
