Safadi shares details of consultative meeting with other Arab FMs

AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Monday held phone calls with several Arab foreign ministers, briefing them on the outcomes of the Amman-hosted meeting of the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Egypt and Syria, which falls within joint efforts to take a leading Arab role in solving the crisis in Syria.

During the calls, Safadi acquainted his Arab counterparts with detailed information about the meeting, which ended with the declaration of the Amman statement. The statement included agreements on several steps to gradually resolve the humanitarian, security and political repercussions of the crisis, according to a ministry statement. 

Later on Monday and into Tuesday, Safadi will continue the phone calls in the context of coordination and consultation with other countries. He will share the details of meet, which is the first meeting between Arab countries and Syria since the beginning of the crisis, marking the launch of a new political path in the efforts to resolve the crisis through an Arab-led role.

Safadi emphasised that the Amman meeting represents a “positive start” to a path to address all the repercussions of the crisis and reach a political solution in line with the step-by-step methodology and the UN Security Council Resolution 2254. This path builds on Arab initiatives, efforts and contacts to resolve the crisis.

Safadi conducted calls with the Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Bahraini Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Omani Minister of Foreign Affairs Bader Al Busaidi, Kuwaiti Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Salem Abdullah Al Jaber Al Sabah, Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita and Lebanon Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdullah Bou Habib.
